Dubioza kolektiv “Film za djecu i odrasle”

If you still have not picked up on how excellent the Dubioza Kolektiv are I recommend you watch the documentary “Film za djecu i odrasle” about them on Youtube. I didn’t know a thing about the music scene during the war in the former Yugoslavia, but I will certainly try to find out more since I saw it. The band have been going a long time and I just love what they do.

10 years since Remembering Machine

I can’t believe it’s 10 years since one of my all-time favourite albums was released: Remembering Machine, by Secret Archives of the Vatican. How time has flown.

I remember getting my hands on the album for the first time. It was a cold winter’s night in Croydon, and was my first meeting with Vince Millett and Louis Counter, who form the core of the collective. I’d discovered their music online and was playing tracks from their Babylon Halt album, which had been 10 years in the making and I really enjoyed. I’d never actually met the guys in real life but we’d been chatting online and said we should meet up one day.

Vince was waiting on the corner just outside the pub and we both recognised each other immediately, being similarly “hirsute” and “well-toned”.  Vince has gone to live up to the well-toned moniker, whereas I still remain in “inverted commas”. On the way in to the pub he pressed a CD-R of Remembering Machine into my hands and said it was the new album. This was only 6 months after Babylon Halt, so I was surprised at the speed of its release, but I was interested in hearing it.

Vice, Louis and I got on like a house on fire and I’ve been a big fan of their music ever since.

I couldn’t listen to the album until I got home, but when I did I was a little surprised. This wasn’t “son of Babylon Halt”. It was weird. With glitchy beats and almost subsonic basslines. This was new territory for me. I’m not sure I liked it.

I persevered listening to it, and something changed. This album grew … and grew … and grew on me. Just like all the great albums I had listened to my life: Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon,  Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures,  James’s Laid,  Massive Attack’s Mezzanine,  Leftfield’s Leftism  and Underworld’s Second Toughest in the Infants. These are all albums I’ve been unsure of, on first listening, but which still give goosebumps today. Part of the soundtrack of my life and I remember the day I got them vividly.

So, if you haven’t heard this album, then I implore you to get down to bandcamp and pick up your copy today. If not least, because it’s Vince’s birthday today, and it would be a fitting birthday present for him!  Go on!  You know you want to.  I promise you’ll not be disappointed.

Soon everyone will be a Podcaster…

According to Murderous Maths, when Elvis Presley died in 1977, it’s estimated there were about 170 people impersonating him. This number grew and grew and in the year 2,000 it was estimated there were about 85,000 Elvis impersonators. And in 2043 that number is projected to be 9,447,645,907 ,which is roughly the projected poulation of the Earth.

There’s been a big increase in celebrities creating (or planning on creating) podcasts in the last few weeks.  Ralf Little, Susan Calman and David Tennant in just the last week.

When podcasting first started in 2004 there were very few UK podcasters. Rowley Cutler did Dark Compass, Richard Vobes did the Vobes Show and Green Gragon (aka Martin Devaughn) did Bytesize Bonus.  The first podcasts I heard were Tane Piper’s Tripcast Radio and Phil Coyne’s Bitjobs for the Masses, which inspired me to start PC Podcast.  Thankfully Rowley and I are still around, and we were both part of the podcast “revolution” that Podshow|Mevio were going to mastermind, but which eventually closed, along with the Podsafe Music Network.

After, what I consider to be a “low” period (2011 – 2016) when a lot of podcasting resources and podcasts closed down, leaving only the real enthusiasts|technicians to keep plodding away, we do seem to have a new resurgance.

I’m not expecting this resurgance to mean everyone will be a Podcaster and an Elvis Impersonator, as that would be some repetative content, but lets hope this new wave will be interesting!

PCP#588… Randomly Selected….2019-01-16T16:28:23+00:00

Special PCP this Friday!

I’ve been messing about on the website and I’ve created something which I think is rather special for this friday’s PCP.

I’ve recorded 26 tracks, complete with the usual explanations of where you can get the tracks from etc.  But the podcast will comprise of 13 tracks randomly selected from the 26. I’ll change the random selection every minute so wheoever downloads the podcast first, the next person gets a different selection, and could, in fact get completely different tracks altogether.

Maybe it’s just me trying to be clever, but I’ve been inspired by Louis Lingg and the Bombs who have been creating tracks for some kind of Artificial Intelligence program to create new pieces of music.

Free Music Archive’s new home: KitSplit!

Good news from the Free Music Archive:

“After months of uncertainty about our future, the Free Music Archive is joining KitSplit, a camera gear rental platform by and for creators. With KitSplit’s support, we will stay up and running for the indefinite future – something we are very relieved to report. Though KitSplit is a for-profit business, the FMA will remain true to its mission of sharing free, curated audio to all.

In the coming weeks, we will reopen artist/curator uploads and our Music Submission form and resume our regularly scheduled audio weirdness, curated playlist posts, and new releases here on our blog.

The Free Music Archive will be one of many educational resources in the KitSplit library – they have a bounty of informative materials on their blog, Viewfinder, and they offer free coaching sessions to women in film and video, which we think is sorely needed and super cool. The Free Music Archive is widely used and loved by indie video producers, and KitSplit wants to make our archive even more accessible and useful by bringing our audio collection to their community’s attention.

While this milestone is bittersweet and we’re sad to be saying goodbye to WFMU, we are forever in their debt for making the Free Music Archive a reality. We are excited to be able to preserve the archive and continue our essential work of curating the Commons with the support of KitSplit.

Thanks to everyone who supported us during this uncertain time, who reached out with moral support or made donations to keep the lights on, and especially to our amazing, inspiring, awesome community!! We are looking forward to the future for the Free Music Archive as its collections and communities grow, and we hope the best years of the Free Music Archive are yet to come.

For more details on the transition as it unfolds, please check the KitSplit blog and/or subscribe to their newsletter.

For this news in Spanish, please visit the blog at Libre FM – thanks friends for the translation! “

FMA future secured

IGood news from the Free Music Archive:

Update: FMA’s Future

Friends, something wonderful is happening here at FMA, but we can’t give you all the details just yet.

For the time being, we are still suspending new uploads and backing up our MP3 collection at archive.org/details/freemusicarchive, but we’re thrilled that service will NOT be suspended on December 1 as previously indicated.

Thanks for sticking with us during this time of transition, and we can’t wait to tell you all about what’s in store for our beloved Archive!

Expect to hear our big news by the end of December.

Goodbye FMA and thanks for all the fish

I’ve just found out that the Free Music Archive is shutting down.  They commented on Monday 5th November:

We regret to inform you that due to a funding shortage, the FMA will be closing down later this month. The future of the archive is uncertain, but we have done everything we can to ensure that our files will not disappear from the web forever. The full audio collection will be backed up and available at https://archive.org/details/freemusicarchive (some of the collection is already there; feel free to go browse).

We are also partnering with Archive-It to preserve a current copy of the site’s public pages in the Wayback Machine. FMA audio will also be added to the Creative Commons project CC Search, a search engine for the Commons, later in 2019.

The site may go down as early as November 9th, so now’s the time to download your playlists, favorite songs, and do whatever personal archiving you need.

Want to help us preserve the FMA or make your own custom FMA collection? You have two good options:

1) Go to https://webrecorder.io/, make a free account and record some browsing sessions. You can save pages, search results, and much more using this tool (I’ve already done some serious browsing & recording – check out my collections here). If you want to share your sessions with us, we can compile a crowdsourced repository. The site may go down at the end of this week, so if you are going to do this, please do it soon.

2) Go to the Wayback Machine homepage and plug in the URLs you want to save. These are then archived for the public to use. There are browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox that make this super easy. Some pages are saved already, but many of them are outdated, so save away!

Share this information far and wide; we don’t want our hard work (and amazing collection) to be forgotten. There is hope that we can find a new parent organization to help us continue the project, but for now, we must take a break and figure out the best course to proceed. We are interested in hearing from anyone who wants to offer web development help, funding, nonprofit status, or has other suggestions. There is a comment form below for this purpose; please put your feedback there.

Thanks, most of all, to you – our amazing community! From the volunteers who helped us maintain the site and bring new artists on board, to the curators and bands whose contributions diversified our collections, to our funders, to the folks that used the site everyday and made it the legendary corner of the web that it truly was. It was an amazing nine years, and we are extremely proud of what we’ve accomplished together.

Since then the site has now done dark.

Update: Closing Date Pushed to Dec 1

Many of the music resources I used were from the FMA, although many were cross referenced ar archive.org. There’s less and less places now where Creative Commons licensed music can be uploaded for free and can be found my music lovers.

I guess we should be grateful that other resources still exist.

Thanks to Dave Lee for updating me on this.
