The YouTube Zone

One of the strong recommendations from The Great Escape conference sessions last week was that music podcasts should be uploaded to YouTube, because it’s the second biggest search engine, after Google.  So I’m experimenting with a couple of episodes of DSZ, TDZ and H2Z.  Check them out and please tell me what you think!

…and then two at once!

Like waiting for a bus, it’s all or nothing.  Today, two arrive at once.  There are two new EPs from Angel Dust Records and Broken Drum Records, both labels close to my heart, for obvious reasons!

Various Artists – Melodica Time, is a 4-track EP featuring some heavy stepper dub action from 4 of the best dubbists from the French online dub community. The first release from Angel Dust Records since the end of 2011. Good to see them back!

Thousand Yard Prayer – World Without End, is a 4-track EP from another of the alter-egos of the Secret Archives of the Vatican crew, over at Broken Drum Records. Hot on the heels of his 2002 release (!)  Sympathy for Hosea, Thousand Yard Prayer gives us another 4-tracks of Transglobal Breakbeat Dub Science. Magic!

DSZ#50 Crowdsourcing Request!

The Dub Step Zone is approaching it’s 50th episode. Since starting in January 2009 I’ve played some fantastic tracks and get lots of downloads and listeners. A big thank you to all of you, and to all the artists that have made their tracks available via Creative Commons or other means. That’s what makes the show great.

I want to make episode 50 a crowdsourced episode. If there’s a track that you’ve loved in the last 49 episodes that you’d like to hear again in a DSZ Mega Mix then please drop me an email at pete.cogle@gmail.com and tell me which track you think should make the cut. Or just drop me a comment at petecogle.com.

Justin Wayne’s Podcast Report

Justin Wayne, one of my fellow podcasters from AMP and MIUK has written a report for his college on the future of podcasting. He’s based it on figures from a number of podcasts, including my own, and has included soundbytes from Rodrigo de Sa, from the Azores.

Both Justin and Rodrigo actively broadcast live in streamed shows, and, of course, I don’t, so we have different opionions, but it’s interesting to see what the figures show: both downloading and streaming are on the increase.  New media (if it still is “new” of course) is alive and well.

Rolling.fm – In Dub We Trust!

One of my listeners contacted me yesterday to tell me of a new website he thought I might be interested in: rolling.fm.  It’s a virtual party based in which you can listen to DJs, become a DJ yourself or share the decks with your friends.

Having listened to a few people DJ in Second Life I was quite interested, but it’s the collaborative aspect that makes this much cooler, plus there’s no need to use a costly server (such as shoutcast or the like) as all the tracks are uploaded in advance and played from the site directly.

There’s also a chat room, the opportunity to pimp your avatar and the ability to send someone a virtual drink. Needless to say I think this is very cool.

So, why not head down to the “In Dub We Trust” room (setup by RussDaFari, my listener, based on the East Coast of the US) and checkout our dubs, join in and enjoy the party.  You’ll find me hiding under the DJ pseudonym “Audacious P Dubdaddy

One Million Downloads and Counting!

I’m always amazed at just how many people download my podcasts.  At the end of last year I was really pleased to see the number of downloads had doubled year-on-year from 233,293 in 2009 to 504,862 in 2010.  I was wondering if the trend would stay the same or decrease, but I’m even more amazed to say that it’s increased and during August 2011, the one million download mark was passed. In total there have been 1,111,257 downloads of the PCP, TDZ, DSZ and H2Z  shows, up to end of August 2011.

That’s not to say it’s all plain sailing. There have been some troughs as well as peaks in downloads over the years, and there’s been a massive drop in downloads of The Hip Hop Zone in the last month.

Nevertheless, I’d like to say a big “Thank You” to everyone who listens, to those that send me emails or website comments and share their love for the shows, and especially to the excellent artists, who make the shows possible.  If you especially love an artist or a track then please do follow the links in the show notes and say “Hi” to them! They will love you for it.

There’s another new record label in the making. Put together by Muhammad Abdullah Hamzah (but you may know him by his artist name Celt Islam) , EaRtH CiTy ReCoRdZ is for alternative and electronica musicians and artists. Any artists or musicians interested in releasing their material should send all demos to Abu Sulayman at celtislam@googlemail.com.

I’m already looking forward to it, and there’ll be a track from the new Raqs Al Maghreb EP, in Saturday’s PCP.

Please welcome: Angel Dust Records

I’ve been thinking about this for ages, but it’s taken a spot of cajoling from the likes of Clithers and my son, Mikey, to finally kick me into action: I have started a netlabel.

Two weeks ago, I registered the domain, started building the site and contacting some of my favourite artists. Since then I’ve figured out where the releases should be posted, how the music gets uploaded, sorted out creative commons licenses and legal agreements and BOOM! ….. the first release from Angel Dust Records has been released today.

[adr-001] Various Artists – Dust Particles, Volume One is a 6 track EP featuring some of my absolute favourite dub and dubstep tracks. You can download it today from Angel Dust Records and, over the next few days, I’ll be releasing it via other online sources.

A big thanks to Dr Remix, Mastermind XS, Baby Arm Sound System, Phoniandflore, 303db and Secret Archives of the Vatican for taking this leap of faith with me. Special thanks to Vince Millet (from SAotV) for the excellent artwork.

I hope you, the listener, will enjoy the first release. I’m now on the lookout for more artists for [adr-002]. If you have a recommendation, please drop me an email: angeldustrecords@gmail.com.

A cup of beer (or two) in Berlin

I’m off again to Berlin next week and I really looking forward to meeting up with some Berlin netlabelists, musicians, podcasters and bloggers at one of their #tassebier (a cup of beer) meet-ups.

It all started with the interview I did in pcp#344 when I talked to Volker and Dub One! from Id.OEOLOGY and I told them I hoped to be back in the city again soon, and it would be good to talk over a beer.

Well that time has come, and Volker has invited a load of his fellow netaudio friends to join in.  It’s even been blogged about on the blog.rebellen.info website by Peter Withoutfield, so if you’re in the area, come and join us:

Time: Monday 23rd May from 8pm

Now writing for Netlabelism.com

I’ve just joined the team writing reviews and articles about netlabels at http://netlabelism.com.

My first review is for Mikus’ two albums:  Rememberance Dubs, out on Planet Terror Records and Brass Islands of Dub, out on his own new label, Terra Incognita, which I mentioned here a couple of weeks ago.

Here’s a bio of the http://netlabelism.com/team ……

Netlabelism is a loose bunch of music-addicted people who love to share the most valuable tunes to be found on the internet for free. We pick up quality music on the web and try to give you an overview of the vast range of netaudio (music).

The music albums and ep being reviewed on Netlabelism havn’t necessarily been licensed under Creative Commons by it’s artists. We also listen and present Non-Creative-Commons tunes; as long as the music is free to people! It’s about music, nothing less, nothing more. We basically review Electronica and its various genres , but we are also open to artists producing non-electronical and unusual stuff.

If you have any questions, comments, suggestions or ideas – don’t hesitate to contact us!

Enjoy Netlabelism.com

If you have a release that you think I’d like and want to let me know then drop me a line at pete@netlabelism.com.

Review of 2010

It’s been another interesting year at the Podcast Factory.  First of all there was a record number of downloads…

In 2009, I was proud and amazed to report that The Dub Zone had over 118,000 downloads, and The Dub Step Zone, which had only been going one year had nearly 53,000.  Well, in 2010, I’m completely blown away and humbled by The Dub Zone getting nearly 197,000 downloads and The Dub Step Zone shooting up to over 234,000 – that’s more than all the downloads of 2009!  PCP had a steady 58,000 downloads, and all in all it the number of downloads increased from nearly 231,000 to 489,000. That’s a 112% increase.

I’d like to say a big thank you to my listeners who downloaded any of my podcasts during 2010, making this my most successful year since I started in January 2006. I’d also like to say and even bigger thank you to all the artists, without whom there would be nothing to download. I hope those of you that enjoyed the tracks have gone on to download, or purchase, some of the great albums available from the excellent netlabels out there.

In November I decided that I wanted to make some changes, start a new podcast and so I decided that PCP would end, after a 5 year run in January 2011.  So I set about recording 4 “Best of PCP” podcasts, which featured some of my favourite tracks over the last few years.

Then something very strange happened! Firstly loads of people told me they would be sad if I closed down the show… and then PCP won an award!  First I was told I’d won an award for “Best Personality Podcast for 2010 in the UK“, in the European Podcasting Awards. Then I gathered later that I actually beat all of the other European entries and so PCP was voted overall “Best Personality Podcast for 2010“.

It seems rather crazy to shut down an award winning podcast and so after a long time thinking about this over Christmas break I’ve decided that PCP will continue.

I have some changes planned to liven up the show a little and add even more content, so the new show will be sort of “PCP…The Next Generation”.

I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who voted for me at the European Podcasting Awards. It really was an unexpected and humbling experience, especially when there was some excellent competition in the top 20 from 4 other members of the Association of Music Podcasting …. Justin Wayne, Grant Mason, Peter Clitheroe Rowley Cutler!

I do hope that everyone who now listens enjoys all or some of my podcasts. Let’s hope 2011 is as good a year for podcasting as 2010 was.

Happy New Year Everyone!

Pete

Al-Mizan, the new album from Celt Islam

Since the release of Celt’s debut album Dervish last year his reputation as a producer, remixer and performer has grown solid. He has been busy working on new material and playing club nights and festivals in the UK and Europe with his live outfit the Celt Islam Soundsystem. Celt’s live performances have had audiences mesmerised with his unique mix of heavyweight dub riddims, DnB and dubstep, fused together with a strong middle eastern flavour. This original sound earned him a slot on the BBC Introducing stage at this years Glastonbury festival, which was followed up by a cracking profile in the BBC documentry ‘Hello Glastonbury’.

In the last year Celt has released tracks on compilations such as Fuel Vol 2, Sufi’s Secret 2 and On the Level by Future Dub along with the Foundation Trilogy EP’s on U.S.R.

The new album Al Mizan started out life as an exclusive 6 track download EP back in August on the Urban Sedated download store, demand has been high for a physical product so we have prepared a limited edition CD with 9 new tracks and fresh artwork.

So turn up the bass levels, and enjoy the second album from Celt Islam – featuring the many talents of Bongo Chilli, Ricoshay, Inder Goldfinger, DanMan and Dawoud Kringle.
