I was a bit more selective with bands I’ve seen live this year but I still managed a huge number. Here’s a selection of tracks from bands that share their music via Spotify:

Review of Mutations Festival 2025
Review from “When The Horn Blows”:
-
Mutations 2025
Mutations 2025 was only 2 days and I saw 19 bands. This is the least number of days of any of the previous festivals.
- 2021 – 3 days – 31 bands
- 2022 – 4 days – 24 bands
- 2023 – 4 days – 31 bands.
- 2024 – 4 (out of 5 possible days) – 26 bands
- 2025 – 2 days – 19 bands
When I started going on in 2021 the capacity was set around 900 tickets per day, which is the capacity of Chalk. The USP of the festival was that everyone could see the headliners at chalk each day. In 2025 I calculated the capacity of all the venues combined to be 2050 and they sold 2000 tickets. On the second day the combined capacity in the evenings dropped to 1900 so it was inevitable that some people would not get into some venues and all the venues were rammed. This is the same problem the Great Escape festival had back in the late 00’s. It’s not sustainable and will piss people off.
Anyway, here’s who I saw in 2025:
Friday 7th November
- Silver Gore at Patterns
- Makeshift Art Bar at Chalk
- My First Time at Revenge
- The Orielles at Chalk
- Mandrake Handshake at Revenge
- Ratboys at Revenge
- Pollyfromthedirt at The Folklore Rooms
- Renny Conti at The Hope and Ruin
- Mamalarky at The Prince Albert
- Teke::Teke at The Prince Albert
- Adwaith at The Prince Albert
Saturday 8th November
- Midding at Green Door Store
- Ashnymph at The Prince Albert
- Blood Wizard at Green Door Store
- Men An Tol at The Hope & Ruin
- My Precious Bunny at Alphabet
- Nightbus at Green Door Store
- The Oozes at Revenge
- Waldo’s Gift at Patterns

Mutations 2025 Lineup Announced
Back to Mutations Festival again next weekend. My 5th time. This time it’s just two days. Once again there are bands I want to see playing until 2am. Fuck that shit! I’m sick of promoters putting on gigs that are after the last public transport home. People that do not live in the city cannot attend those events. Not good enough.

Gnarwal Festival Review
I attended the first Gnarnwal festival at The Green Door Store last weekend. Big thanks to Luke and Angel from Gnarly Marmalade & WhattaWally for putting it on. I really enjoyed seeing 19 acts I’d never seen before. Here’s the Brighton and Hove News review:

Ireland’s basic income scheme for artists made permanent in 2026

The Irish Government’s Basic Income for the Arts scheme was started in 2022. Now it’s been made permanent in October’s budget. The three-year pilot scheme provided 2000 artists and creative arts workers with €325 per week to enable artists to have the time to make creative work. 9000 people applied to the first round in 2022.
The National Campaign for the Arts said the key findings of the recent research report into the scheme found it kept more artists in the sector, promoted better mental health, supported the creation of 40% more artwork and provided €1.39 back to the state for every €1 invested.
Wouldn’t it be great if the UK were as far sighted as the Irish?

The Great Escape 2025
No podcast this year! No waffly-bollocks at the train station! No Grumbler! But at least myself and Clithers (aka Bill and Ben) had a lovely time.
Summary
We walked 51,949 steps (that’s 22.12 miles), caught 8 busses, 6 trains and 3 taxis, ate 3 great meals (including zero kebabs!), drank 12 pints of beer (our lowest ever!), Saw 23 bands from 7 countries at 13 venues. Shall we do it again next year? Hell yeah! Already got the tickets baby!
Because inevitably I will forget, here’s a record of who we saw at TGE 2025….
Thursday 15th May (14,970 steps, 6.51 miles)
- 12:00 Say Sue Me at Jubilee Square – slightly lethargic indie pop from South Korea
- 12:55 Day We Ran at Komedia Studio – Soft rock from Australia. Blood-harmony vocals from three brothers and a drummer (from another mother).
- 13:55 DICE at Komedia Basement – Harder Indie rock from Australia.
- 15:30 Chinese American Bear at Revenge – Didn’t get to see much as the venue was rammed. Quirky Korean indie pop.
- 19:00 Common Goldfish at Revenge – Entertaining indie rock from London.
- 20:00 Oreglo at Revenge – Jazz Rock lives! 21st century re-imagining of the Mahavishnu Orchestra.
- 21:00 Holiday Ghosts at ALPHABET [AltEsc] – Ridiculously hot venue fond home for Brighton favourites.
Friday 16th May (21,814 steps, 9.63 miles)
- 12:31 Marketplace at Prince Albert – joyous indie-pop from Harlepool.
- 13:30 Cat Ryan at Prince Albert – indie-pop from Newcastle with African-infused guitar licks.
- 14:30 Baby’s Berserk at Paganini Ballroom – energetic electro pop from Amsterdam.
- 15:15 Charleeeee at Daltons – joyous LGBT+ live drum and bass energy from young trans people living their best life.
- 18:30 The Roebucks at Hotel Pelirocco [AltEsc] – Not a great sound, but always wanted to see the AltEsc at tis iconic hotel.
- 19:15 The Slow Country at Manchester Street Arts Club – youthful new-folk/country that I really enjoyed, despite my best attempts to tell myself I wouldn’t.
- 20:15 EGGY at Manchester Street Arts Club – Edgy, discordant, art-rock from Melbourne, Australia.
Saturday 17th May (14, 365 steps, 5.98 miles)
- 12:15 Patche at Komedia Basement – electronic, instrumental krautrock from Montreal, Canada.
- 13:30 Papa Romeo at Prince Albert – jazzy funk from Dublin, Ireland.
- 14:15 Bad Buddy at Green Door Store – sassy punk from Edmonton, Canada.
- 15:15 Ideal Living at Dust – art-rock from Brighton
- 17:15 Spacestation at Revenge – not quite as kraut-rocky as expected, rock from Iceland.
- 18:15 Dabo Lang at Patterns Upstairs – electronic rock trio from Beijing, China.
- 19:15 Oh! Dirty Fingers at Patterns Upstairs – punky 4 piece from Changhai, China.
- 20:15 Nighticket at Patterns Upstairs – electronic house music duo from Beijing, China.
- 21:15 RadioMars at Patterns Upstairs – jazzy rock 5 piece from Beijing, China.

Where’s The Music…?

The Tuts 📷: Ian Bourn When you go to a product website you expect to see products on sale, right? Socks, food, cameras. That’s why you go there, to look and to buy.
So why do so many of the The Great Escape artist and band websites have no music on them? If I want to go to your website, your facebook, twitter or instagram page I want to hear some music, see a YouTube video or something that tells me what you’re going to be like live. It’s not that hard to do either.
So why is that peeps? Where’s the person that should be doing this? Where’s the manager or the label rep when you need them? Get on with it.
If you want a job done then get do it yourselves. That’s what upcoming bands The Tuts are doing. Lots of piccies and video snippets on Facebook and Twitter and music on Bandcamp. They even have their own Wikipedia age. And now they’re supporting The Specials!!
Come on you TGE bands. Get your arses in gear and get your music out there. And of rant.
