One day I will have the money and the inclination to go to Iceland Airwaves. It always looks to be so amazing and be able to see so many excellent Icelandic bands.
This year many acts I’ve seen were there… Bar Italia, Benefits, Lambrini Girls, Lynks & Opus Kink. But I would absolutely love to have seen K.ola & Hjalmar and find lots of my next new favourite bands.
In the meantime I’ll just enjoy the playlist…

Another chance to hear the second of my two “final” podcasts from July 2015….. and of course I started the podcast again in May 2016!
In this “final” PCP, all the tracks are from one band, The Secret Archives of the Vatican. Based in The Cronx (Croydon), south of London, this collective of musicians is led by Vince Millet and Louis Counter. They met via a web forum and have been working together for over 15 years. Their music is unlike anyone else I’ve ever encountered (which is a good thing!). I’d like the lasting memory of PCP and the first thing people to listen to (the last show in the feed) to be from “The Archives Massive”……

Having seen Sheherazaad and her band perform at the Mutations Festival I’m been bewitched by this beautiful album. She played more tracks than were on this album so there will be more tracks to come soon as well. I’ll keep you posted.
Consider these two people, writing about the Grassroots Music scene.
Left: Bob Lefsetz has just written a piece in his Leftsetz Letter “Let The Clubs Close” in which he says “The bottom line is today’s generation doesn’t want to go to clubs to listen to the music of unsigned/developing acts“. He goes on to say “People are hungry for music, the new and the different. But today it rarely starts in clubs. For all the denigration of the internet, that’s where it starts, and then it goes to live, that’s the formula“. He uses the example of Sam Smith: “He had a hit record and immediately played arenas… if you’re known, the demand is there“. Lefsetz is obviously a “disrupter”. One of these people that likes to thrown unpopular statements out onto the internet for clickbait and to raise hackles.
Right: Mark Davyd, who’s hackles have been raised, has responded with “Let the Bob Lefsetz Column Close Down“. He paraphrases Leftsetz view that “Playing a stadium is all the live music there needs to be, because the only thing about live music is the money that’s made from it“. Davyd’s view, as CEO of the Music Venue Trust, is that the pipeline of new talent needs to be nurtured or else the arena’s will have no talent to showcase in the future. Davyd is seeking an arena levy to help fund Grassroots Music Venues (GMVs).
So is this just the usual right vs left, capitalist vs socialist argument? Well, although I’m firmly of the belief that GMVs are worthy of frequenting (in my case weekly, or sometimes daily), I can’t help thinking there is a big problem with the scene.
I love Grassroots Music and so do my “tribe”. But my tribe’s demographic is largely older people. Most of us go to gigs because that’s what we have done since we were younger. In my case, since the 18th September 1976 (not that I remember it or anything). My tribe is at the barrier waiting for the support band. My tribe is in the mosh. My tribe are sitting on the shoulders of others singing along loudly (yes, I’m talking about you Jules, last night at the Mutations festival). Younger people do attend these gigs but they are in the minority. Why?
Part of the “problem” as Lefsetz suggests is it’s “Five guys, and it was almost always guys, gritty from the city, working it out on stage, playing rock music“. Although in Brighton it’s never just five guys thankfully, and it’s never just rock. Does this put younger audiences off? Well maybe it does. The atmosphere at gigs I go to is as much about alcohol as music. I’ve cut back on the amount I drink for multiple reasons, but I am aware that my single pint of beer doesn’t keep the venue going, and the ticket price bares pays for the sound man, and certainly not the band or the promoter.
I’m finding younger generations do not drink alcohol. So does this put them off attending a GMV? I think it probably does. Plus I also find that indie rock isn’t always the music of choice of the younger listener. Are there urban, rap, hip-hop, grime… nights taking place? What’s the audience demographic? I honestly don’t know, because I won’t be there to see it for myself. I don’t listen to that music. Maybe I should? This Thursday’s Mutations Festival schedule is predominantly those genres of music. I have decided not to attend, not least because, at 63, 5 days at a festival is hard work. But maybe I should attend? Maybe I need to find out?
So this is the crux of the problem. How do we know whether GMVs are going to die out when my generation shuffles off in the direction of a care home? We don’t. How can we protect what we love when the people wondering what to do: Leftsetz or Davyd or me, are old white people? We can’t.
So what will be do? Well, having just find out that Trump is going to be “disruptor in chief” for the next four years, I’m going to go back to the mutations festival and enjoy what I’ve got and hope for the best. Cornish Bagpipe Dub Reggae Morris Dancing anyone?
I love this Danish artist K.ola. She’s got some great albums on the Icelandic netlabel post-dreifing. This is her latest. Give it a listen.

I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s time for PC Podcast to retire. I know, I know, I’ve said it in the past and I’m still here wittering on about it. I first suggested it in December 2010. Then I won the “Best Personality” section in the European Podcast Awards and naturally changed my mind. Then in July 2015 I stopped after show #500 only to reappear at the end of May 2016 with a Great Escape episode. On both occasions I felt I’d had enough. I was tired and a bit down.
This time it feels different. I think the tide has changed. There are now more podcasts than ever and my little show is getting lost in all the noise. Plus I think podcasts are now the medium of talk and opinion, not of music. True crime, plus endless talk about politics. Celebrities talking to other celebrities about other celebrities. Endlessly. Music podcasts seem to have shrunk into the background.
Add to that music consumption has changed irrevocably. Although many radio shows still get some reasonable listenership, most people discover music through generated algorithms or via curated or generated playlists on the big platforms like Apple Music or Spotify. I have to say the approach works. I have found lots of new artists to enjoy based on how much I use Spotify and how much it understands my tastes. Algorithms work.
In other mediums I have tried creating monthly Spotify playlists based on my shows, but I have gained no traction. My YouTube uploads have had to stop as more and more artists register their tracks’ digital signatures for copyright. This even includes some of the creative commons licensed tracks. My Mixcloud uploads have never gained any traction and only my Hearthis.at uploads have made it worth the effort to share on that platform. My samplers are fun to create and get a few shares on TikTok, but it’s just a social media sideshow.
My podcast download stats have hit rock bottom. In the 19 years I have been producing the show they have never been this low. There are a few dedicated souls who still download, like social media posts and occasionally comment in email, but fewer and fewer each week.
AI is also a game changer. Pretty soon there will be AI shows out there that will leverage algorithms and playlists and create a full audio-visual experience targeted at the music podcast audience. Just stay away from anything called Skynet!
Don’t get me wrong. I still love searching out new music and sharing with people. I just think podcasts are not the way to do this anymore. Especially for a niche show like PCP.
So, we have reached the end game for PCP. By the end of 2024 I will have wrapped up the show and laid it to rest in the time capsules that are petecogle.co.uk and archive.org. I don’t feel that sad. I gave birth to the podcast; it grew up and moved on. What more can a parent want?
The Dub Zone will continue for the foreseeable future. It still gets some traction, although less than the “good old days”. It’s still fun and quite easy to make.

The first is our old friend Jesse E. King (a.k.a. Dubmatix) from Toronto, Ontaria, Canada. Starting out as a dub-infused Drum ‘n’ Bass artist, DJ Ironbelly, Dubmatix has grown into one of the most-played artists on my podcasts. His music is always the best quality and makes me happy.
He also has his own podcast, the Sticky Icky Reggae Mix which you can find at https://dubmatix.podbean.com/.
